Children and Families
If we could export and single gift from Appalachia to the whole nation what would it be
Appalachian’s love and sense of place?
Appalachian’s gift of hospitality or perhaps our patriotism?
Our faith?
At KAM, we think it would be the intergenerational family ties that bind the people and place together. Appalachian families are strong, courageous, welcoming. And yes--like so many of the families in our nation--Appalachian families are under stress. In some parts of Eastern Kentucky, drug addiction has reached epidemic numbers. Moreover, the excessive school dropout rate, unemployment and, even more critical, underemployment, also makes family life difficult.
At KAM, we celebrate the marvelous gifts that are found in the people and place of Kentucky Appalachia. Nevertheless, we are honest in naming those problems that threaten our cherished way of life. Mother Teresa said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” At KAM, we focus on one project at a time. For example, we have supported “back to school” programs, family gatherings to bring healing for those struggling with addiction, home repair, hospice ministry, flood relief, children’s music programs, and ongoing support of our military chaplains. Given our small size, we cannot do everything at once, but, with your help, we can make a big difference in the lives those families and individuals were we are able to lend a hand.
We invite you to join us. Name a concern that you, your family, congregation, church group, or organization supports and then partner with KAM to make a difference. You may chose a onetime event, such as a coat or food drive, or you may wish to provide on going support to KAM’s general budget or a particular KAM program. We are faithful in our stewardship and thankful for every gift of prayer, time, labor, money, or food, or assistance.Get Involved

.Beloved Appalachian author and scholar Loyal Jones and his friend, photographer Warren Brunner autograph their book, "Appalachian Values," for U.S. military chaplains. Kentucky Appalachian Congregations, working with KAM, sent these autographed books to over 150 military chaplains along with a heart felt thank you for their service.
